Meaning of the Protection Symbol

Native American Indians were a deeply spiritual people and they communicated their history, thoughts, ideas and dreams from generation to generation through symbols. Native American symbols are generally geometric portrayals of celestial bodies, natural phenomena and animal designs.

The Protection symbol is depicted as two arrows within a circle. The weapons were symbols of the major form of defence for the American Native Indian and the circle was another powerful symbol. A circle around another Native American symbol signifies family ties, closeness & protection. The circle has no break and cannot be broken. The black center circle depicts the air symbol which represents life.

There are many icons that symbolize protection in the culture of the Native American. The meaning of the Wolf and Wolf Tracks symbol symbolized direction and leadership and embodied both protection and destruction. The meaning of the Turtle symbol signifies good health and long life. The hard shell of the turtle represents perseverance and protection. The hand symbol represents spiritual power, strength, domination and protection. The meaning of the above single arrow indicated protection and defence. The bear had spiritual power, wearing a bear claw necklace meant protection and good health to the Indian wearing it.

The Iroquois Confederacy - The Tree of Peace
Dekanawida, the Great Peacemaker  and Hiawatha united the 5 nations to create the Iroquois Confederacy. The Great Peacemaker used a white pine, called the Tree of Peace, to symbolize the peace and friendship that had been established. The branches of the Tree of Peace represented protection. A far seeing eagle sat upon the top of the tree to symbolize a warning system if the tribes were in danger. Beneath the roots of the Tree of Peace a weapon was buried which symbolized that there would be no fighting between the Iroquois tribes.
