Description of the Picture
The artist of this painting, George Catlin, painted Chief Black Hawk and his warriors when they were prisoners at Jefferson Barracks near St. Louis in October 1832. Pam-a-hó, the Swimmer illustrates the shaven head and oval geometry of the features that were common to the Sauk Fox warriors.
